Eight layers of filtering - an attractive feature for the Tullis Russell Group

“We were looking for a solution that wouldn’t consume a lot of our time and we found this in Bloxx. We can forget about it and let it do its job, which makes life a lot easier for us.”
Herc Coetzee, Infrastructure Manager, Tullis Russell Papermakers Ltd.
Background
The Tullis Russell Group has a 200 year history, serving its papermaking and coating services to over fifty countries worldwide. The group places real commitment on technology to communicate to this wide client base and the Internet plays a major role in this day-to-day communication.
With around 250 computers, the Group was looking to have more control over its Internet filtering. It was acutely aware of the problems associated with the web and operated a lockdown policy on Internet use. It previously used Border Manager (Novell) but decided more comprehensive filtering was needed. SurfControl was considered but it proved too costly and time consuming to use.
The Challenge
The Tullis Russell Group wanted its filtering product to have the following main features:
Efficient time management
Previously, too much time had been spent fixing and updating filtering software. It therefore wanted something that freed up the time of the IT department.
Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware
Additionally, Tullis Russell wanted a solution that could filter viruses and spyware before they reached the desktop.
Cost efficiency
Cost was an important factor in the choice of a new filtering solution. The Group did not want a solution that had lots of costly ad-on features.
The Solution
The Tullis Russell Group purchased a CF-250 for their papermaking services’ office. At a later stage, another Bloxx was purchased for the sister company, Tullis Russell Coaters Ltd.
Key Benefits
Appliance based
Tullis Russell was impressed by the appliance based solution Bloxx provided. As Bloxx operates as a separate server, this considerably reduced time spent fixing problems associated with software based versions. As Bloxx is an appliance, you can simply leave it to operate on its own with no problems or hassle. The appliance also considerably lowered costs as the Group no longer had to pay per user.
Additional Protection
Along with web filtering, Bloxx appliances incorporate another five layers into the filtering process: Anti-Spyware, Anti-Virus, File Download, Instant Messaging and Peer to Peer Management. These all come as standard involving no extra costs, which proved very beneficial for Tullis Russell.
